I have a short mention in an article Wired Magazine recently did on my roommates, EDM producers THE M MACHINE, for the release of their debut EP on Skrillex’s OWSLA Records. IN PROGRESS: Grip Tape Collages

It’s no secret that I’m a skateboarder through and through and have been for the majority of my life. As I get older unfortunately it has become harder and harder to get on my board as often as I’d like to. One thing I really miss is the physical process of setting up a new skateboard deck. With that in mind, I started to make some simple paintings (or maybe a more appropriate term is collage) using skateboard grip tape as my primary medium. It was no surprise that I instantly fell in love with the process and final product. The nostalgic and emotional connection I have to setting up a new board is in this case translated to a piece of fine art, the process is exactly the same. In fact, cutting images into my grip tape as a kid about 15 years ago was how I got into stenciling in the first place. Further, the textural and optical qualities that are inherent in the material are incredibly rewarding to work with. In the end, you have an object that is functioning on multiple levels: physically, mentally, emotionally and optically. Anyway, I’m freakin’ in love with these things and am very eager to see how far I can push them. Below is a sneak peak of just the first 3 experiments I completed back in early February. You’ll have to wait until my upcoming solo exhibition at White Walls Gallery in October to see finally see them in person. And YES, those are actual colored skateboard bolts in the second one. Also, there is no paint in any of these, just colored grip tape. Enjoy…

White Walls is proud to present the White Walls Winter Group Show opening February 11th, 2012. White Walls is celebrating years of continued success with a showcase of artists that represent the art we have long supported and always loved. The commitment to showing incredible artists is evidenced by the lineup of talent, featuring artists that we are honored to have shown many times in the past alongside artists we are excited to see more of in the coming years! An expansive collection of work will be brought together in one space, opening Saturday from 7—11pm, February 11th. The exhibition will be free and open to the public and will run until March 3rd, 2012.

OCEANIC AWARENESS COLLABORATION: Charity Auction @ WW

If you are in town on the 18th of this month, you’d be well advised to stop by White Walls for this charity auction to benefit the Oceanic Awareness Collaboration. It’s a great chance to pick up some really affordable art by an array of fantastic artists and all for a good cause.

“A collaborative group show with an effort to raise awareness & funding for the purpose & progression of Oceanic Awareness Collaboration. Proceeds will be designated as scholarships, research funding & creative sustainability projects. This art show will directly benefit The OAC Fund, which provides underprivileged kids with scholarships to attend the CIMI Marine Biology Camp on Catalina Island, CA. Proceeds will also fund OAC’s creative endeavors built around art, music & fashion to make a difference in the youth culture & to provoke positive change both locally & globally. Oceanic Awareness Collaboration, Inc. is a 501(c)3 tax deductible charity organization.”
